About PRP Process

PRP therapy involves taking a blood sample from the patient itself and then transferring it into a centrifuge for concentration. Here the platelet and plasma are separated from the rest of the components of the blood. This concentrated solution is then injected back at the area where the patient is injured.

Platelets are very important in terms of growth and protein. They are required for the repair and regeneration of damaged tissue. This therapy works well because here the own patient’s blood vessels are used to heal their injury.

Types of injuries PRP can heal includes:

  • Chronic knee pain
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Muscle strains
  • Tendinosis
  • Rotator cuff strains and tears
  • Tendonitis and ligaments sprain

Pre-procedure guidelines

Before the procedure, your physician will discuss with you what to expect during the procedure:

  • First thing is to stop taking any anti-inflammatory medicines 5 days before your procedure
  • Stop taking any blood-thinning medicines 1 week before the date
  • Discontinue taking any systematic steroids 1 to 2 weeks before the procedure
  • Avoid taking steroid injections 1 week before the procedure
  • On the big day, eat a healthy breakfast and drink plenty of water.

Keep in mind that if you are taking any chronic oral steroids then you need to talk to a health care provider about its discontinuation as abrupt stopping can lead to side effects.

Post-Procedure Guidelines

After the procedure, the patient is expected to take rest for the day. After that for a few days, he needs to make less use of that injected area but needs movement too as it will help to recover your joint as the injection is being absorbed in that particular area.

First 0-3 days after the procedure

You will feel some pain in the area where it is injected. This is normal as your injected site is getting accustomed to this injection. However, avoid taking any medicines until it is otherwise advised by your physician.

Other than this, you cannot apply ice packs or take a hot bath for some days. Smoking, alcohol and beverages are strictly prohibited.

4 weeks after the procedure

You can start with light exercises as it is very beneficial. Ice packs can also be applied as required. Anti-inflammatory medications can be started but as directed by your physician.

5 weeks after the procedure

You can start with physical therapy for long-term healing. Continue with a follow visit even after the recovery till the physician expects.

Normally PRP injection recovery can take around 3-7 days to lessen swelling and soreness. The effects can still be there for around 3-4 months.
